KAINDY

From the series Steppe

Kaindy is a turquoise lake in the Kolsai Lakes National Park, 130 kilometres east of Almaty and 2,000 metres above sea level. It formed when an earthquake set off a landslide that dammed the gorge. The water rose over a forest of Schrenk’s spruce, and the bleached trunks still stand above the surface; locals call it the sunken forest. Like every Steppe painting, it was built up in thin washes on canvas laid on the floor and finished with Gali’s fingertips.
